Getting Started
From the Customers' Perspective
I have no agenda. I have no stake in the outcome. I take a look at your site from your customers' perspective. What do they see? How hard is it for them to find what they're looking for? How hard is it for them to find the things you want them to find?
I begin with the assumption that you've worked very hard to get your Web site to this point and for that, I congratulate you. Well done.
End of praise.
My pet peeve is a Web site built for the company, about the company, of the company. If your site is not all about your customers, I'll tell you in no uncertain terms where you're missing the boat.
Time to put on your thick skin and put down your pride of authorship. A Jim Sterne Web Site Review is all about what's wrong and needs to be fixed.

Why an External Review?
I have tried to review my own Web site and find the task impossible. That's because I know where every link leads. I know what information can be found on which pages. I can surf my site faster than anyone else on the planet.
The forest-and-trees syndrome says that site owners and managers are simply too close to the project to view it impartially.
My job is to tell you about the problems you have that are obvious to others, yet remain invisible to you and yours.

Review Format & Delivery
I began providing written reports and quickly found that too much time went into the writing and not enough into broadening the scope of a review. I can cover a lot more ground by delivering a PowerPoint presentation than in writing.
I use PowerPoint to capture a "customer" visit, and then deliver the review in person or online.
A review workshop allows for a lot of interaction and discussion, which tends to cover a wide range of topics. Online delivery allows for more convenient scheduling, the possibility that participants can log in from multiple locations and can usually occur with a shorter lead time.
The length of a No-Holds-Barred, Personal, Jim Sterne Web Site Review depends entirely on the size of your site and how much of it you'd like me to review. I've reviewed entire sites as well as those areas that are of particular interest to particular departments.
The format is a running commentary from the customer perspective with screen shots of offending pages so that reasons for my invective are plainly visible. Clients receive a CD with the PowerPoint file on it after the Review.
